A
Song About You
A song about you would have to have a thousand verses
Each one being more tragic than the last.
Full of new dresses, shoes and matching purses,
Lightning mood swings with thunder coming fast.
Of course there would have to be a verse about last October.
Your new friend was throwing a party. You had to attend.
You behaved yourself quite well while you were sober.
But the Tequila shots brought out bad karma in the end.
~
I must be crazy to have stayed with you so long.
I thank my stars that I’m still young and free.
I’d been blinded by your beauty until you said, “Write me a song.”
“Write a long and wonderful song all about me.”
~
There would have to be a reference to having two faces.
The one that I see and the one I keep hearing about.
And dropping the names of visited people and places
And all of the wonderful things that you do without.
I’d have to say something about how you start conversation,
As if somehow we had all been reading your mind.
Belaboring mundane points with such animation
Explaining the obvious to us as if we were blind.
~

It seems that every event in you life is a big deal.
A self-inflicted disaster to share with your friends.
Watching you weight while planning ahead for your next meal.
The dieting merry-go-round ride never ends.
Though you look stunning in heels and a little black dress, dear
The term “high maintenance” could have been coined just for you.
You can still drive me crazy I guess I have to confess, dear.
But lately that’s only when you’ve nothing better to do.

Though our eyes may be clouded at times by our perceptions,
On close observation, the truth will always come through.
The bit part I play in your movie has caused some reflection.
You are the star here, and everything’s all about you.
I guess I should have known when I started this project
It would end with you in tears, me packing my bag.
But I guess that is still better than the alternative prospect
Of living my life chained to a self-centered hag.

I must be crazy to have stayed with you so long.
I’ve had my say and now I guess I’m through.
I’d been blinded by your beauty. Then you said, “Write me a song.”
So here’s a long and wonderful song all about you.
